US gay bishop responds to Rick Perry ad
US gay Episcopal bishop says Rick Perry sinks to new low in ad on gays and religion
By The Associated Press

CONCORD, New Hampshire (AP) ' The Episcopal Church's first openly gay bishop says Republican presidential hopeful Rick Perry has hit a new low with a campaign ad attacking President Barack Obama on gay rights and religion.

The ad is intended to appeal to Christian conservatives who typically dominate the Iowa caucuses, which are the first vote on the road to the 2012 presidential election.

The ad features the Texas governor saying there's something wrong in America when gays can serve openly in the military but kids can't pray in schools.

Bishop Gene Robinson of New Hampshire responded Tuesday with an opinion piece in The Washington Post newspaper in which he says Perry would be pathetic if he weren't so infuriating.

Robinson says someone who aspires to be commander in chief shouldn't denigrate the gay and lesbian soldiers he would lead.

New Hampshire holds the first election primary Jan. 10.
