US man convicted of second-degree murder for killing 8 people at nursing home in 2009
CARTHAGE, North Carolina (AP) ' A jury in North Carolina has found a man guilty of second-degree murder for shooting eight people to death at a nursing home in 2009.
The jurors returned their verdict against Robert Stewart on Saturday after two days of deliberation.
That decision means Judge James Webb will impose a sentence on Stewart. He is not eligible for the death penalty.
Defense lawyers never denied that Stewart was the gunman at Pinelake Health and Rehabilitation Center on March 29, 2009. But they argued that he was so addled by mental illness and a mixture of prescription drugs that he wasn't fully responsible for his actions.
Prosecutors had sought a conviction on first-degree murder charges, saying Stewart knew exactly what he was doing.
