Top US military officer says differences with China remain stark despite recent visit
TOKYO (AP) ' The top U.S. military officer says differences between his country and China are stark and greater understanding is needed if a trustful relationship is to evolve.
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen said Friday that he believes his recent visit to China helped improve communications and military-to-military relationships with the fast-rising Asian power.
But he added that the growth of China's military strength is a matter of serious concern. He said it is too early to say if its growth is truly defensive in nature, as China claims.
Mullen is visiting Japan after spending nearly four days in China and also visiting South Korea.
