Obama's attempt to open lies to North Korea's new leader fizzles with failed rocket launch
WASHINGTON (AP) ' President Barack Obama's hopes of using diplomacy to defuse an unpredictable, nuclear-equipped North Korea fizzled with that country's failed rocket launch. That leaves Obama with little to show for his overture to the new North Korean leader, and it's not clear when the U.S. might try again.
The launch Friday in defiance of U.S. demands scuttled a once-promising deal to exchange U.S. food aid for nuclear concessions. The White House says the launch proves that North Korea cannot be trusted to keep its commitments.
Obama now has few options to restart negotiations. He would face almost certain criticism from Republicans if he tried.
Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney has already accused Obama of trying to appease the communist nation by dangling a "naive" food aid deal.
