State Department says no one hurt as mob in Syria threw rocks, eggs at ambassador's convoy
WASHINGTON (AP) ' The State Department says no embassy employees were hurt when a rowdy, violent mob tried to attack the U.S. ambassador to Syria and his convoy in Damascus earlier Thursday. The assault came as the U.S. group visited the office of a Syrian opposition figure.
Spokesman Mark Toner says Ambassador Robert Ford and his colleagues are now safe.
But, he says, several vehicles the group used were seriously damaged by the demonstrators.
Other department officials say the crowd pelted Ford's motorcade with rocks as well as eggs and tomatoes. The melee lasted an hour before Syrian security forces cleared the mob.
The U.S. has called for Syrian president Bashar Assad to call off attacks on civilians and to step aside.
