Pentagon sending military aid, boats to countries neighboring Libya
By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) ' The Pentagon is sending more than $25 million in military equipment, small boats and other support to Tunisia and Malta, two nations that flank Libya and are key allies in the tumultuous region.

The funding, detailed in documents obtained by The Associated Press, is part of a $44 million Pentagon aid package, and will serve to bolster Tunisia's fledgling democracy.

Tunisia was the birthplace of the Arab awakening early this year, after a popular uprising there launched a wave of anti-government protests and calls for greater freedoms and democracy across the Middle East. A number of countries have been watching Tunisia to see how it handles the transition.
