Obama administration targets 3 senior Assad regime officials with sanctions
WASHINGTON (AP) ' The Obama administration has slapped new sanctions on the Syrian government by banning Americans from doing business with President Bashar Assad's foreign minister and two other senior officials.
The Treasury Department's action Tuesday also blocks any assets the Syrian officials may have in the United States.
Those targeted are Walid al-Moallem, Assad's foreign minister since 2006; senior adviser Buthaina Shaaban; and Ali Abdul Karim Ali, Syria's ambassador to Lebanon.
Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence David S. Cohen says the sanctions target "principal defenders of the regime's activities."
