Unions back online anti-corruption campaign encouraging S.African whistle-blowers to report
JOHANNESBURG (AP) ' South African corruption busters are taking to the Internet.
In a campaign launched Thursday, whistle-blowers are encouraged to submit information about graft to a Corruption Watch Website and a cellphone message hotline. Corruption Watch will gather and publicize information about official corruption, and hand evidence of crimes over to authorities.
The effort is backed by COSATU. The trade union coalition, which is allied with the governing African National Congress, has repeatedly pressed the ANC to clean up government, saying corruption is draining the country of funds that could be used to build schools and hospitals, create jobs and end poverty.
ANC leaders say they take the fight against corruption seriously.
