Urban League rebukes Santorum on racial stereotype
Urban League: Santorum perpetuates stereotypes of black people for political gain in Iowa
By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) ' The head of the National Urban League is accusing Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum of trying to leverage a stereotype about black people for political advantage in Tuesday's Iowa caucuses.

Marc Morial (MAW'-ree-al) also called on other Republican candidates to repudiate comments Santorum made Sunday while campaigning in Sioux City, Iowa.

Videos posted on several websites show Santorum discussing federally funded public assistance programs, then saying: "I don't want to make black people's lives better by giving them somebody else's money. I want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn the money."

Morial, the Urban League president, says Santorum was pandering to racist elements in the electorate and should be ashamed of himself.

A Santorum spokesman did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
