Vonn wins World Cup super-combined event
Lindsey Vonn wins WCup super-combined to extend overall lead on Tina Maze

ST. MORITZ, Switzerland (AP) ' Lindsey Vonn won a World Cup super-combined event Friday to extend her lead in the overall standings against second-place Tina Maze.

The American defended her lead from the morning downhill with a solid slalom leg to clock a combined two-run time of 2 minutes, 28.35 seconds.

Maze of Slovenia was 0.41 seconds back and third-place Nicole Hosp of Austria trailed Vonn by 0.58.



Vonn earned 100 World Cup points for the victory and leads Maze by 302.

Her 48th career World Cup win began her defense of the season-long super-combined title.

ST. MORITZ, Switzerland (AP) ' Lindsey Vonn began the defense of her World Cup super-combined title Friday by capturing the downhill portion on the Engiadina course and leading three Americans in the top five.

The American raced down the sun-soaked track in 1 minute, 43.53 seconds, 0.61 seconds faster than Elisabeth Goergl of Austria.

Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany completed the top three. The Olympic champion in super-combined has 0.91 to make up on Vonn in the afternoon slalom run.

U.S. skiers Leanne Smith and Olympic silver medalist Julia Mancuso placed fourth and fifth.

Tina Maze of Slovenia, Vonn's closest challenger in the overall standings, was 1.41 back in sixth.
