Vt. cheese-maker to scale back milk hormone claims
Vt. cheese-maker Cabot agrees to scale back claims about milk hormone
By The Associated Press

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) ' The parent company of a Vermont cheese producer has agreed to scale-back claims about whether its dairy farmers use an artificially produced hormone to help their cows produce more milk.

The Vermont Attorney General's office says that in 2009 and 2010 the Cabot Creamery Cooperative overstated claims that none of its farmers used the artificial hormone known as rBST. The attorney general's office says some of the products made by Cabot cannot be certified as free of rBST.

Cabot is owned by the Methuen, Mass.-based dairy cooperative Agri-Mark Inc.

The state says that Agri-Mark has agreed to pay the state $65,000 and to donate $75,000 worth of dairy products to food banks. The co-op also must accurately inform the public about "the rBST status of its products."
