National Weather Service: Stormy weather brings 'unprecedented' hail storms over Hawaii
HONOLULU (AP) ' The sunshine Hawaii is normally known for has been replaced with thunderstorms and large pieces of hail.
National Weather Service meteorologist Tom Birchard says Friday morning's hail storm over windward Oahu is "unprecedented" for Hawaii. He says not only is it highly unusual for hail to fall over Hawaii, but some stones were as large as three inches.
He says cold weather in the middle and upper levels of the atmosphere has led to strong updrafts that has kept the ice chunks from melting before hitting the ground.
There have also been reports of smaller hail on other islands.
Days of heavy rain over parts of Hawaii has closed schools, caused sewage spills and ruined vacations.
Thunderstorms are in Friday's forecast but heavy rains are expected to subside Saturday.
