White House can't put time frame on end of Assad regime; once said his days were 'numbered'
WASHINGTON (AP) ' The White House, which once declared Syrian President Bashar Assad's days numbered, now says it can't declare a time frame for when the regime might come to an end.
President Barack Obama's spokesman, Jay Carney, tells reporters Friday that Assad has lost credibility with his people and with the international community. Syrian security forces were firing on thousands of protesters Friday despite a cease-fire deal agreed to by Assad.
Carney said the White House still believes Assad's tenure will come to an end.
But, he added: "It is difficult to put a time frame on that."
In February, Carney repeatedly stated that despite Assad's crackdown on demonstrators his "regime's days are numbered."
