With morgues full, unclaimed flood victims are buried in devastated southern Philippines
ILIGAN, Philippines (AP) ' With funeral parlors overwhelmed, authorities in a flood-stricken southern Philippine city are organizing the first mass burial of some of nearly 700 victims who were swept to their deaths.
Mayor Lawrence Cruz of Iligan said the city's half a dozen parlors are full to capacity and no longer accepting bodies, which have been dug out from mud and debris littering much of the area.
He says the first burial of 50 or so unclaimed bodies will take place later Monday in individual tombs.
In nearby Cagayan de Oro city, the situation was more chaotic. City administrator Griscelda Joson says people are resisting mass burials, instead demanding that bodies be interned until relatives can claim them.
The death toll neared 700 with more missing.
