Woods tops leaderboard in Australia
Tiger Woods shoots 67s to top Australian Open leaderboard midway through second round
By The Associated Press

SYDNEY (AP) ' Tiger Woods topped the leaderboard for the first time in nearly a year after a 5-under 67 on Friday in the Australian Open.

Woods ran off a string of impressive shots, the best a 3-wood from 280 yards into a 15 mph wind on the par-5 eighth to set up a two-putt birdie. He was at 9-under 135 and had a one-shot lead over Peter O'Malley.

O'Malley, who had a 66, beat Woods in the opening round of the Match Play Championship nine years ago at La Costa.

If it holds through the afternoon, it would be the first time Woods has led after a round since the third round of the Chevron World Challenge last December. And it would be the first time he has led after a round in a full-event event since his last victory two years ago this week in the Australian Masters.

Jason Day, playing alongside Woods, birdied the last hole for a 68 and was two strokes behind.

Woods is one of eight Americans tuning up for the Presidents Cup next week.
