Yemen: Gunmen kill deputy director of Taiz central prison, daughter, 2 guards
SANAA, Yemen (AP) ¯¯¯ A Yemen security official says gunmen have killed the deputy director of the central prison in Taiz, one of his young daughters and two guards. Another daughter and two guards were wounded.
Taiz, the second largest city in central Yemen, was a focus of protests against former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who stepped down in February.
The official said the gunmen opened fire Monday at Col. Saleh al-Awlaki's car and another vehicle carrying his guards.
The official said the it was not known who the attackers were. He spoke on condition of anonymity according to security regulations.
Yemen's al-Qaida branch claimed responsibility for killing an American teacher in Taiz in March, saying he was trying to spread Christianity in the mainly Muslim nation.
