New movie theater opening at Edgewater Mall
A new state of the art movie theater is coming to Edgewater Mall in Biloxi. Officials say it will open next year. Biloxi hasn’t had a cinema of this kind since before Hurricane Katrina. Biloxi is known for its casino, beaches, resorts, and restaurants, but for years, the city’s entertainment line-up has been missing something. A brand new movie theater is planned to go up at Edgewater Mall and be completed by next November. Residents and Visitors are already excited. Louisiana Resident Marie DeYoung said, “I think it’s fantastic. I don’t go to casinos and I don’t even go for shows, but more of that kind of entertainment makes this an ideal place to visit for a family.” Premiere Cinemas will be built in the building that used to be Sears at the Edgewater Mall. The state of the art movie theater will have eight wall to wall digital screens and luxury reclining seats. Biloxi Resident Cameron Smith said, “I don’t go to the movies much just because of the drive. I feel like having one closer by would make me a lot more, I guess, up for going to the movie theater.” The cinema’s construction design includes plans to turn the pavement around where the new movie theater will stand into 20,000 square feet of landscaped green space. The addition will come with improvements to the food court and the mall’s entrances. All set to take place near the new restaurant called Barefoot Billy’s Grill and Bar which is scheduled to open early December. Edgewater Mall General Manager Terry Powell said, “It creates a great entertainment environment for the mall. This and some other things we’re anticipating for the future. In today’s retail environment you have to look outside the box.” When construction wraps up, the building will be filled with recliner seats. Get your popcorn ready, the grand opening is set for November 2018. “It’s one more feature for those who live locally and those who are visiting for a short little hop to entertain,” said DeYoung.

Extra Table Fundraiser November 16th
Fighting hunger while raising awareness about healthier food choices is what the nonprofit group Extra Table is all about and five South Mississippi mayors are using their culinary skills in the fight. The day starts early at Feed my Sheep in Gulfport and for a good cause. Feed my Sheep Executive Director Randy Brownlee said, “We’re here to feed the hungry and the homeless and the needy people in our community just to ensure that they get a good healthy meal at least once a day Monday through Friday.” Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes lent a hand Tuesday morning and will be putting his culinary skills to the test, paired with a celebrity chef, competing against four other South Mississippi mayors from Bay St. Louis to Pascagoula in this year’s Extra Table fundraiser on November 16th at the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino. “We became aware of this particular charity last year and the impact it would have on our food pantry and food pantries across the Coast. It was kind of a no brainer for all of us. You see a direct impact. I think out of last year’s proceeds we fed over 30,000 families across South Mississippi,” said Mayor Hewes. On any given day, Feed my Sheep feeds about six hundred people throughout South Mississippi and that’s what this fundraiser is all about: serving food pantries across the Coast. Beau Rivage Public Relations Director Mary Spain said, “Extra Table is an organization that buys healthy food in bulk and provides it to the existing soup kitchens and food pantries. So, along the Gulf Coast, St. Gerard Outreach will benefit. Loaves and Fishes will benefit. Lord is my Help will benefit. Feed my Sheep and Our Daily Bread, it’s really a one coast event.” The competition among the mayors taking part in this fundraiser is already heating up, Mayor Billy Hewes responding to Ocean Springs Mayor Shea Dobson’s assurance that he will edge out the other four South Mississippi mayors competing, including Mayor Hewes. “He’s young. He’s going to find out some things. Youth and exuberance are no match for old age and treachery, so we’ll just see how that plays out,” said Mayor Hewes. The public is invited to attend.
