Ole Miss head basketball coach steps down
A week ago today, Ole Miss head basketball Coach Andy Kennedy announced he would step down from his post at the conclusion of the 2018 season. Yesterday, he sped up that timeline. The winningest coach in program history is no longer the head man in Oxford effective immediately. In a press release from the university, Kennedy states his feelings that his decision failed to relieve his current players of any external pressure to succeed. The Rebels’ current seven game losing streak would certainly support that notion, the most recent two defeats coming after last week’s announcement. Assistant Coach Tony Madlock will serve as the acting head coach for the remainder of the season. Here’s part of Kennedy’s official statement given yesterday: “My continued presence as the head coach is proving detrimental to these players finishing the season in a fashion that is representative of the standard for this program. I believe that is in everyone’s best interest that I exit my role as head coach effective immediately.”

Gulfport claims 6A soccer title
They say to be the best, you’ve gotta beat the best and that’s exactly what the Gulfport soccer team did on Saturday for the second time this season to claim its second ever state championship. The Admirals were going up against their former coach, Cecil Hinds, who led them to their last state title in 2010. This time, Henrik Madsen guided them to the crown. Gulfport also took down the Jaguars in the regular season, 2-0, leaving no doubt about its status as top dog over its class 6A foe that won it all as recently as 2016. Long Beach boys and girls are still in search of their first-ever respective titles with the Lady Bearcats falling in a golden goal overtime period. The St. Stanislaus Rock-A-Chaws bring home the hardware with a 1-0 victory.
