D’Iberville football embracing fresh start
With pre-district games now on the backburner, 6A schools like D’Iberville are about to enter the depths of the second season. Region 4 play takes center stage on Friday with the Warriors looking to defend their crown at Biloxi. They hit the road with a somewhat misleading record of 1-3, although Head Coach Eric Collins would argue his team has a clean slate. "Well it's like I told our kids, that first half of the season doesn't mean a whole lot. Now that's in the past, whatever happened is in the past. Everybody that starts district is 0-0." It’s a fresh start for a D’Iberville team that hasn’t won a game in more than a month, riding a three game losing streak into district play that has the Warriors more battled-tested for having run the gauntlet. "We had to go to Tylertown, and then we had to go to Madison, and then we had to go to Picayune. And that's pretty tough to go on the road those three weeks and our guys, they just took it in stride." The Warriors won the first game of that road trip before dropping the next two and then losing their home opener to West Florida. Those three defeats came against teams with a combined record of 10-2. D’Iberville Center Louis Paul Smith said, "I mean I feel like going in with that mindset, everybody is 0-0, really makes our team, it gives us more confidence knowing we had a very tough pre-district schedule. It really showed us a lot. But coming in we're just ready to play some football. Out of a bye week ready to smash some heads, play some D'Iberville football. Man, we're excited." D’Iberville Outside Linebacker Thomas King said,"It's a burning feeling inside me. Like it's something that's just ready to come out, and everybody on the team, they're just ready to play." Eager as they come, the Warriors had an extra week to prepare for a hungry Biloxi team that is still looking for its first win of 2017. "You can forget records, I mean it doesn't matter. We're 1-3. We think we're pretty good, but we're 1-3. I'm sure they think they're pretty good and they've just got to put it together." But more than that, this week is about gearing up for the big picture, framed by D’Iberville’s 2016 region 4 championship and its road to reclaiming that crown. "Well the X-factor is this off-week right here. If we've made some improvements in some areas we need to get better in, and only playing in a game will really tell that." "Definitely makes us coming in, we're the top dog. Everybody is trying to beat us, and our mindset is we're trying to win district, it's the road to state." "Don't get complacent and keep fighting, keep fighting. Just like it's going into district it's 0-0, and we're going to come out on top." D’Iberville and Biloxi will square off at 7 p.m. on Friday from the home of the Indians.
