Cranbrook Art Museum to reopen after $22M makeover
Michigan's Cranbrook Art Museum aims to enliven collection, inspire artists with renovation
By The Associated Press

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. (AP) ' No hidden treasures. That's the goal that rose to the top during a two-year, $22 million restoration and expansion at the Cranbrook Art Museum outside Detroit.

The 80-year-old contemporary art museum plans to reopen Friday after a renovation of its building designed by famed architects Eliel and Eero Saarinen and construction of a new Collections Wing.

The latter aims to make accessible about 6,000 works of art, architecture and design. Glass walls allow visitors to see ceramics and other collections in vaults.

Small groups will be able to view gems in the main vault, such as chairs by Charles and Ray Eames. Pull-out racks also feature rarely seen art by Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol.

Museum director Gregory Wittkopp says the goal is to "make visible what is normally invisible."
