When we heard Mac McCaughan was going to be in Chicagoto catch a Mikal Cronin show as part of his Merge Records honcho dutieswe had to ask if hed step into the Undercover ring again. Superchunk graced us with a Cure cover during season one, and Mac was one of the subjects of our One Track Mind series as well. For this years Undercover: Summer Breakwhich will run twice a week for the next five weekshe decided that hed like to tackle Jonathan Richmans “That Summer Feeling.” But it wasnt that easy: The song is so long, Mac wanted to find someone to trade verses with him, so we tracked down Kelly Hoganherself a veteran of last years Summer Breakand the two graciously agreed to board a double-decker Chicago tourist bus and play the song for us. It was bumpier than we expected, but we headed down Chicago Avenue, then down Lake Shore Drive, and eventually around the Museum Campus, which houses the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium, and Solider Field. It was all very Chicago-y. Mac and Kelly even busted out an impromptu, unrehearsed cover of Nick Gilders “Hot Child In The City,” which were hoping theyll allow us to show you at some point. Superchunks new album, I Hate Music, comes outAugust 20, and the band will play A.V. Fest/Hideout Block Party in September. Special thanks to Walt atChicago Trolley & Double Decker Co. for setting us up with the big red bus for the afternoon.
