I wasn't going to ask Rick Springfield's publicist if he'd do a Summer Undercover this year for us, because I just assumed he'd say no. Somebody¯¯¯I think it was Marah¯¯¯told me just to give it a shot anyway. Turns out Springfield¯¯¯best known for a string of '80s hits, including "Jessie's Girl"—had read and liked the piece that Annie Zaleski wrote for us about teen idols who don't get no respect. Before his headlining slot at Naperville's RibFest, Springfield stopped by the backyard of our video director's parents (also, conveniently, in Naperville) and rocked out his version of the Peter Green-era Fleetwood Mac song "Oh Well." Springfield has had a fascinating career, rocketing to fame in the '80s before disappearing from music for a spell, then returning to a truly diehard audience. A documentary about the singer/actor, and specifically his relationship with those diehard fans, was released on DVD today: It's called An Affair Of The Heart. Enjoy.
