This morning, the Vancleave baseball program celebrated its first ever MHSAA state title with a championship parade. Students grades K through 12 lined both sides of Bulldog Lane as players and coaches took their victory lap down to the baseball field. The Bulldogs won it all on Friday by sweeping New Hope in the 4A title series and finished as the only undefeated team in the post-season at 10-0. After four prior trips to the South State finals with no hardware to show for it, the newly crowned champions say this year’s title run won’t soon be forgotten in Vancleave lore. Head Baseball Coach Daniel Best said, "Obviously, any time you win a state championship it's a great feeling to be the first one in school history and have all these guys here that have been working for it their whole life to get one before they get out of here is awesome." Right handed pitcher Bailee Hendon said, "It ain't hit me yet but I'm pretty sure a couple years from now that yeah, you realize you come out here and you're the only ones that won it. And it feels pretty good." First baseman Justin Stokes said, “I mean it's a big deal just since we haven't ever won a state championship and everyone came out here and was so supportive throughout Jackson and throughout South State. It was a big deal." Right handed pitcher Hayden Robb said, “This is always going to feel the same. I mean holding this trophy right here is just something to be forever proud of and it'll never go away from our program, it's something that we have that we took ourselves and it's just a special moment just to sit here and have everybody out and watch us do what we did." The 2017 volleyball team was also honored today as the first squad to bring home a state championship regardless of sport.   [READ MORE]
