The Volkswagen Touareg SUV accomplishes two things for the VW brand. It's the only midsize SUV in the lineup, making it the only choice for people who know they a VW, but need something large or rugged enough for an active family. But, the Touareg also shamelessly flirts with the line between the mainstream and luxury markets, which means current Jetta and Passat owners can upgrade to a nicer car without having to leave the brand. With that in mind, VW has worked to give its mid-size utility vehicle some broader appeal. And while the price remains a major hangup, and while it was known up until recently for its extraordinarily stout construction, it traded in some of its rugged, off-road image for more of a focus on suburban families.
