It was written in the late 1920s, hasn't been staged on Broadway in more than 80 years and isn't a sexy musical, but critics praised the revival of "Machinal" and its star Rebecca Hall, saying it is a "must-see" production. The stylized drama by playwright Sophie Treadwell that opened on Thursday at the American Airlines Theater was inspired by the true story of Ruth Snyder, a New York woman who was executed in the electric chair for the murder of her husband in January 1928 at the age of 33.
