((eric)) we first reported this story to you last night. and more than 2- hundred people commented on our facebook page. maybe you were one of them. eyewitness news reporter chantelle navarro spoke with some pet owners who offered alternatives. chantelle based on what we've read... there are a lot of people unhappy about this. ((chantelle)) that's right eric and mimi. unhappy would be an understatement. many expressed outrage... others said it's unfair. ((chantelle)) dogs barking, saying commands dave schnidt owns dave's doggie den ... a pet daycare in east rockford. he also has four dogs of his own -- so when he heard that rockford city council is proposing a new pet fee to help solve the five million dollar budget deficit... he took notice. dave schnidt, pet owner "i think they should more or less tax the people when they get a complaint on a dog versuses taxing all of us that have animals. why not tax the people that they're getting the complaints on?" and he's not alone. when we asked people what they thought about the idea on facebook -- the post went viral. why not include a city child fee while they're at it? one person posted. another asked why punish those that have a pet or two because the city of rockford cant live within their budget.?" others pet owners we spoke with agreed. mandy edmundson, pet owner "i don't like it, i think it's terrible. we're already so taxed in this city, one of the highest tax rates in the nation. it's just too much. we already pay the licensing tax for the dogs, all the upkeep, it would be a double tax." playing with dogs 2 mandy edmundson owns two huskies, mia and zia. she says that to solve the budget deficit, rockford needs to simply budget better. mandy edmundson, pet owner "they need to figure out how to budget better. that's what i have to do at home, if i don't have the money, i have to budget better." schnidt says it's simply not right ... especially for those who can't afford it. dave schnidt, pet owner "there's a lot of retired people that are on fixed income. that's a lot of money to them. it's going to affect a lot of people a lot of different ways." ((chantelle)) i did reach out to winnebago county animal services about the fees and how it would affect adoption rates. but, they declined to comment. mimi. ((eric))
