"i thought i was equal... " laughs like many teenagers-- gabriela gaddy loves shoes. "these are not the shoes that i wanted, but they don't have any in my size because i wear size three." she says she bought these shoes last week-- while she was shopping with her twin sister at the foot locker in the mall. "the person that helps us with our shoes, and everything, we asked him how old you have to be to work there. and he said, '17,' and i said, 'well, where do you fill out the application?' and he just did like a little laugh, and he was just like, 'good luck with that.' he's like, 'she don't hire females.'" gabriela told her mom about what happened-- and she was outraged. her mother-- crystal borges-- says she called the store-- and recorded the conversation with an assistant manager. borges: "and was told that you guys.. the manager. does not hire female employees." worker: "um.yeah like." borges: "for them not to even bother." worker: "it's just. i'm sorry. i'm sorry about that. that shouldn't have been said. at all." borges: "at all." worker: "what she. it's just that a lot of girls don't last here because they get uncomfortable with the customer base." in the recording the worker apologizes-- and says he doesn't have control over who gets hired. broges "but it is the truth?" worker: "uh, yeah." gabriela says she would not be uncomfortable selling people shoes. in fact, she believes she'd make a good salesperson. "i talk a lot, and i'm good around people, so." laughs gabriela says finding a job is tough enough when you're a teen-- "my mom helped me fill out a lot of applications. and they just don't call back..." and she says it shouldn't be more difficult just because she's a girl. she's sharing her story to warn other women. "i really just don't want them wasting their time, to be honest. i don't want them going in there and trying to fill out an application, and then them tell them that they can't because they're women." i went into the mall today-- and did see any women working in the foot locker. gabriela's mom says when she contacted the corporate office-- they responded with this email-- it has a link to the site where she can apply for a job. but gabriela says she won't be applying anytime soon. jerry? rachel, thanks. we left messages for the store manager-- and she didn't get back with us. we called and emailed foot locker's corporate office-- the communications director sent us an email that reads-- 'thank you so much for bringing this to our attention. we will investigate immediately.
