"plans to completely replace this bridge here on east norfolk avenue are causing some setbacks for local businesses. as many of the shops nearby rely on this bridge to connect them to the rest of the community, the city's seven-month long shut down of this bridge is hampering some businesses. " i think it's going to be devastating to the business along east norfolk avenue. we have tried to work with the city to make this project to where they can leave two lanes open so traffic can get through but we weren't successful in that so we are forced to spend additional advertising dollars just trying to get people aware of how to get to our business. so it's going to have a long-term effect on our business," says al rajaee, president at cornhusker auto. other businesses along this same route say the bridge construction won't have much affect at all. "as far as affecting us, i don't think it will have quite a dramatic effect on us. we actually have two other entrances you can enter our store through which i think will help out a lot," says brian bentonite, manager at hy- vee. although this bridge isn't the only way to get to these businesses, it certainly is most convenient. city officials say keeping lanes open on either side of the bridge may have added additional time to the already lengthy construction period. since this bridge will be entirely shut down starting monday, residents are forced to find alternate routes. "there are many business on east norfolk avenue that are going to have a negative impact from that," says rajaee. this $5.7 million project includes an entirely new bridge, a new walking trail underneath it, and a new waterline
