Cost Of Living Week: Childcare http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12507/6850990?cpt=8&wpid=2637 KLAS Las Vegas, NV know they're expensive -- but -- when you calculate the total amount you're likely to spend on them until they're 17... it might make you cringe. ((denise valdez)) >> consumer advocate michelle mortensen is here with the pricey details... and some ways to cut costs. ((michelle mortensen)) how much do you think it would cost to raise a child these days? if you guessed about 14 thousand a year.. you're right. the u-s department of agriculture recently released the grand total and said it's about 233 thousand over 17 years. yikes!!! the report also also breaks down where most of that money goes. no surprise the biggest chunks go to housing ... food and of course child care or schooling costs. but the real bad news .. is that in nevada child care costs continue to rise. last year for infant care our state ranked 9th worst in the nation. this year we moved up to the 8th spot. for preschool costs we went up from 6th worst in the nation to the worst in the nation. the report shows in some cases child care is eating up nearly 36% of a families income in nevada. now if you have small chidren -- none of this is news to you. but some advice. if you aren't taking advantage of your employer flexible speding or dependent care accounts for child care -- you need to. you can get up to 5000 in tax free dollars using them. and if you haven't done your taxes yet ... talk to accoutnant about and child tax credits for which you may qualify. ((michelle mortensen)) >> and of course the best consumer advice anyone can ever give you. shop around. prices vary .. and sometimes at home care can be cheaper .. depending on your needs. ((michelle mortensen)) >> and if you want to take a look at this latest report .. i'll have it up for you on our latest report .. i'll have it up for you on our website in the 8 on your side section. and all week long i'll be showing you ways to cut costs on the things we just cant cut out of our busgets. tomorrow i'll tackle cutting down health care costs. ((denise valdez)) >> thanks, michelle./// 1. last 80's... then 70's for a while 2. unsettled weather week
