WTAT four news now good evening and they were joining us tonight the movement of nineteen sixty four was a huge turning points that outlawed discrimination based on race color religion and that's when the doors began to creak open for women in the workforce by nineteen seventy the equal employment opportunity commission was a boost to women seeking jobs that were once close to them what we've come a long way since then however there is still a disparity between men and women when it comes to jobs in technology schools and programs are trying to catch up by introducing and encouraging girls and young women to pursue stem cell studies or science technology engineering and math. carolyn finch is executive director of charleston woman attacked and kristin huggins is a social studies teacher at lake middle school in our cars and welcome ladies. hey hi somebody here because stan is just such a huge industry right now in amongst our youngsters. it's really gaining a lot of popularity so let's start with you tell me about the organization wanted to us shores so i'm tossing them in tack is a nonprofit and reformed about three years ago we were too small a group of women about twenty of us and i go to sixteen hundred women which is amazing. so what we do our mission is to support prepare and nurture women of all ages for careers in tech main focuses on adult to get a moment that my plan as adults we can't ignore is that there's a huge gaffe of children and she and girls are now and can stem as well definitely i just moved from the bay area where stands a huge part of studies there and i worked with people whose children daughters were taking classes in robotics and things like that. now if i may ask would you say when you're in college communications in history did you know yes and i have a law degree i am by no means to the zoo today so i was working for the trojans record or wishes the charleston business development office the city of charleston the tech industry. thompson's than the fcc has had since moved on to be its own foundation the fantastic work in the tech industry that was helping the foundation and the city work with the tech companies to come to it to really help them where they need and talent was one of the biggest gaps they weren't high enough talent and the industry. i was approached by numerous women who are saying hey i'm a tech industry to such a scene like that gap didn't quite make sense. honestly their ally woman in town who want to have be part of tech industry we had to find ways to support them. absolutely and you know speaking of on the bay area and silicon valley known as the at the center for technology it's amazing to learn the mount pleasant lake middle school is a number one stand school in the entire country so it for you christian what is it like to be teaching there the opportunity our school has a really unique idea stammer what we think it's time we let the ideas of robotics classes and lego leads and coding always thinking are kids involved that we really wanted to turn into a whole socialist approach so i teach social studies. i want a c stand in my classroom i teach the ancient world so how can he bring stand in technology and engineering in to class everyday firsts today we went all over kate's to expose these things and wear especially excited about what that means very young girls who might not traditionally it has exposed how do you encourage girls to get more interested in math engineering and science. we had a lot of it has a new exposure and access the oh so many of our young females are leaders and they make it to school when they do great and they go into wonderful fields but often it might be stereotypes are other rules that we play but a lot of them get through high school and i didn't even they don't even know that this is a possibility for that or what they could half so we are a lot of exposure and making it a big point today. these are the things that we can do these are the things that people in the past and i'm through history and here's our technologies and just exposing them and getting them interested in getting technology in their hands in the last to spark the interest that young age and i can tell you from personal experience growing up in being a youngster in elementary school that was probably my least favorites of all and it always seem to be a boy subject he was always the reading and spelling that was more girls than for boys they seem to dominate so it's
