http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12513/6861402?cpt=8&wpid=2637 Thu, 06 Apr 2017 12:24:35 +0000 How SLC is helping small business How SLC is helping small business http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12513/6861402?cpt=8&wpid=2637 KTVX ABC 4 Salt Lake City >> emily: welcome back this public economic department is doing great things for the city and now they are helping small businesses as well.we have sylvia castro who is a small and underserved business manager and happy day for in the new job. correct? >> yes i'm really excited to start this. i am in my fourth day in. brand-new on the job. >> emily: talking about the experience you are bringing to the department. >> my job is to focus on the small businesses. i will be a liaison with small businesses in salt lake city. i work with small businesses since 1989. i started with a business center. i counseled many small businesses. it is anything from start up to venture capital. i think some of that will be helpful in terms of this position. >> emily: and you are not relocating here. you know about the state and the couty and community. leaving so much expertise to this. what is the goal for the selling economic development team and to small businesses? what are you hoping to accomplish further down in this new title? >> the position is interesting because usually economic development focuses on -- this is the first time there's an actual focus on small business. we have about 15,000 small businesses in the city. we need to find better ways to maybe if there is any kind of roadblocks. if there any issues that we can do better at. a lot of my time is going to spend the first few days doing interviews and interviewing small businesses. my goal is to meet with 50 of them. >> emily: and delegates know their challenges and when you can do to better serve the community. how would you work to keep these small businesses in salt lake city and not to relocate somewhere else? >> we are basically working with the top state economic development agencies looking at the practice is not just locally but also in other cities. we want to engage the business community to tell us the issues and how we can be a better partner. >> emily: it seems kind of life an obvious question but why so important to keep these businesses in our city and county? >> well, when you want to -- when you walk through salt lake city, the lifeblood even when we talk to companies about moving here. the coffee shop, the bus, those are small businesses. we, usually small business is higher than most employees. i think that it's just - it's a good focus. because it really is what makes salt lake city, salt lake city. >> emily: we love that and we love salt lake city. we want to be as good as possible. thank you for joining us. especially on day four of your job, they really put you to work! i love that. the new salt lake economic department you can get the information on our website www.good4utah.com/gmu. watch for more programs and more
