Research in a journal of the American Heart Association studied more than 40,000 Japanese workers over 15 years. Those who experienced at least one period of unemployment faced an increased risk of having a stroke. New research finds that kidney disease is a major cause of cardiovascular deaths. An international study shows that reduced kidney function can increase the risk of heart failure, heart attacks and strokes. The report says the findings underscore the importance of kidney screening as a way to prevent cardiovascular disease. Air pollution is another culprit in the risk for cardiovascular disease. New research at the University of Washington finds it's because traffic-related smog lowers the levels of good cholesterol in the bloodstream. A study of more than 6-thousand Americans found exposure to black carbon pollution over just a 3 month period can affect cholesterol levels. (Don Champion, CBS News)
