Plus the 2017 Alaska Sports Hall of Fame moment, Vern Tejas’ 1988 winter ascent of Denali. http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12453/6882165?cpt=8&wpid=2637 KTUU the snow is melting and the sun is shining as high school soccer season is here. we head to the pitch. service girls kicking things off against east. thunderbirds with the ball near the net..and kodi belanger gives east the early one to nothing lead. this game would be all the lady cougars winning 4 to one service getting a hatrick from lauren hepler plus savannah nicols pitching in a goal as well. from girls to guys... late in the game service....noah mason puts one on net...east gets a hand on it.. but service's kaidyn milani is there for the rebound... service wins it five to nothing... gunner rogers getting two goals....santiago escobar...japeth taylor...with a goal a piece. as the school year comes to a close thirteen u- a-a athletes were nominated for its bill mackay athlete of the year award. men's nominees include matt anholt of u-a-a hockey..cross country's edwin kangogo..skiing tony naciuk..track and field's cody thomas and basketball's suki wiggs. womens athletes include track and field's..jamie ashcroft and joyce chelimo.gymnasti cs kendra daniels.skiing's charley field..volleyball s morgan hooe.cross country caroline kurgats.and basketballs kiki robertson. next friday they will announce the winner at the annual athletic departments all sport dinner. and finally tonight, we continue our profiles of the 2017 alaska sports hall of fame. vern tejas might already be in the hall....but this evening... kari bustamante tells us why his nineteen eighty eight winter ascent of denali brings him back as the highest peak in north america.....denali...i s daunting --the mountain has claimed lives...broken dreams...so the idea of climbing in the dead of winter...much less alone, might seem unfathomable "a solo winter ascent had been attempted by other people but no one reached the top and survived" --but vern tejas...was up for the challenge "to do it in the winter with less daylight knowing it could be frigid was the challenge people were taking on as well as not having any help" --in the winter of 1988, tejas became the first climber to solo denali --the accomplishment, more than memorable...but makes tejas legendary "that was such a dramatic achievement it enhanced his name and reputation in the climbing world, and as a direct result he was sought out. the drama and stress was a great achievement in the climbing world but tremendously received by all alaska" --because at 20 thousand 3 hundred and 10 feet...this moment...stands highest finally tonight...one finally tonight...one finally tonight...one
