http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12463/6891157?cpt=8&wpid=2637 Thu, 27 Apr 2017 14:54:54 +0000 I&I: American Contemporary Theater Festival (Part 1) I&I: American Contemporary Theater Festival (Part 1) http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12463/6891157?cpt=8&wpid=2637 WHAG >> welcome back. joining me now in the studio, chuck aaron dean. here to tell me about the american contemporary theater festival. great to see you. >> great to be here. thank you for inviting me. as you walked into the studio today, i had to reminisce that i interviewed you for the very first one of these. 27 years ago. >> yeah, in 1991. >> how about that? how did the festival get started? what was the idea here? >> it was a great story. i was up at the williams town theater festival in the berkshire, massachusetts when at the time ben shepard college brought me down as a consultant. he was his idea to start a theater in the summer, professional equity theater and i came down from williamstown and worked with him a few days on how you can get the theater started and one thing led to another. and said what kind of theater should i do? and i said there is a real critical need at that time for a home for new american work and new american plays. and i said yes. and went back up to williams town and gave them notice. and came down and we started the theater festival in 1991. >> here we are several years later. what a success it has been. probably beyond your wildest dreams. >> we knee. we are having a blast in what we do. and we are so passionate to work with so many play rights and artists from around the country. we are dedicated to the mission of producing and developing new american theater and we also knew we were at the right place and at the right time. geography is important. and the fact that we include hagerstown and frederick and martinsburg and shepardtown. and the fact that we exist in the community really matters to us. we love our geography and being a destination shepardstown, being a destination for people to travel and emerge themselves for a month in july in repatory theater, it's a blast. >> pretty easy drive. for those in washington, d.c., new york, philadelphia and surrounding area. >> we have visitors from 37 states that come and visit each year. 60% of our audience is from the washington baltimore region and really this year really focusing on how to draw even more patrons from the hagerstown washington county area. >> let's talk about some of the successes. there have been so many. there have been quite a number of these plays that have been presented in shepardstown that have gone onto big things. >> our track record is really -- we're very proud of it. there is a light beyond. we do world premieres and many have a long life after shepardstown. jeffrey, we have had a complete female play stage beauty. and it started, slick fly which they were early development of, and had a broadway production. we transferred one of our plays in kenny valley to off broadway. and coming up this fall, susan miller which premiered last summer at the festival is going to have its off broadway debut in new york city. many of our plays go around to the regional theaters in dc. giddeon which is a play that we did a world premiere of, is one of the most introduced play in the country that year. >> you know, we're having a good time doing what we do and where we do it. >> all right. coming up we're going to chat about the 2017 season and
