Beekeeping award Mon, 01 May 2017 21:50:04 +0000 Beekeeper Award Beekeeping award WCIA beekeepers in the u.s. >>matt: only one gets to hold the title of being the best. that award went to someone in central illinois. ryan burk got to beat this award winner but to learn that there are international b awards. >>ryan: it's a fine line. the best of the best. the international award rachel coventry entered the best hunting contest last year and she never expected she would win. she was so surprised she placed first. i followed along with her to see what her secret is. it's monday morning, rachel coventry and her grandpa paul curtis are popping on the golf cart. they are not hitting the links but instead are heading out to the beehives. >> i enjoy it because he has experience and good stories. beyond that, he's always taken me two classes and just working together on this project is unique. this is our project together. >>ryan: for years, this grandfather-granddaughter duo has been tending to the beehives. >> i'm very proud of her. she's had a lot of experience in the peace corps working and much more primitive conditions and then here. >>ryan: grandpa paul has a lot to be proud of than just the honey itself but also a big blue ribbon they can display proudly. >> i entered my honey to honeybee research. they had several tiers of judging that it had to compete in and when to progress to be considered the best tasting honey in the world. it competed in lots of different countries as well as different entries in the us. i was completely shocked that it won best tasting honey in the world. i read the announcement several times and i had to have someone else read it because i couldn't believe what i was reading. >>ryan: they say it's probably more nature then nurture when it comes to making the best. >> i can't take credit for it. i'm just the person that takes the honey from the bees. we do a little bit in trying to make sure there is something looming for the bees to collect nectar from. there's cherry trees, raspberries, strawberries, plums, apricots, wildflowers. >>ryan: a unique award that's not just an honor for her and her grandpa, but a way to spread the word about beekeeping. >> i like that it has raised awareness. people are asking what can i do. what flowers are good to plant. i've been able to hook people up with the u of i extension that has a good resource. also encourage them if they want to become beekeepers themselves. >>ryan: encouraging a new generation of beekeepers just like her grandpa did before her. >> i'm very proud of her. >>ryan: savoring a victory as sweet as honey. way to go rachel. i asked them how they got going with beekeeping. funny story, paul who you saw there used to teach agriculture. used to have a student that begged
