http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12463/6924543?cpt=8&wpid=2637 Fri, 19 May 2017 21:25:09 +0000 Indianapolis Zoo Heather talks to Carla Knapp from the Indianapolis Zoo about the new aviary center with free flying macaws and the return of the butterfly exhibit. http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12463/6924543?cpt=8&wpid=2637 WCIA >> summer is the perfect opportunity for a quick getaway. memorial day is just right around the corner. so when i get out of town to the indianapolis zoo? carla knapp is back with us. we are excited to have you back. >> thank you so much for having me! >> this is a great weekend to check everything out going on. >> we have the opening of our brand-new presentation, magnificent. this is so unique and unlike anything else. multiple times throughout the day, we're going to open the doors to a brand-new aviary and the magnificent macaws are going to fly above people's heads. it's about and a half a mile. we are looking at some video now. this is actually what it looks the birds free flying and it is so amazing to watch these brilliant, very vivid birds flying across the zoo. they land at the brand-new bicentennial pavilion. they do a little bit of interaction with the guests. and then they fight back. it is incredible! >> something else incredible and churches see, butterflies making a comeback! >> yes! we do not have them last year and it has been so popular. if. [march. people are so excited to have them back again. we are to! because is just such a very interactive experience that we have. the butterflies come right up, float right around you and sometimes even land on you. >> it is so great to see butterflies making a comeback only here that there possibly becoming endangered. so you have 40 species of butterflies at the zoo. >> absolutely and slightly above exotic and native species to the midwest. plus we give you information on how exactly you can help out bring them to your own s. backyard. >> look at how cute she is! checking of the butterflies. you on everything right. >> yes! our keepers are so good especially the little ones. they love the interaction experience. so that keepers will come if they are looking for an interactive experience with the butterflies. >> and you have a few opportunities for people to interact with the animals. >> absolutely! guests that come in every day having opportunity to pet sharks, they can be direct, get up close with some amazing big cats and then if they want to plan in advance, we have opportunities for guests to come behind the scenes and get up close their animals. >> this right here is what my favorite parts of the zoo. this orangutan exhibit. we can actually see them you know climbing these roads above your head. it is amazing! >> he really is and it has been such a popular exhibit for us. i think it is really educational and inspirational as well for guests to come in and get to see these incredible apes up close. >> yes, springtime brings lots of babies. i hear you have lots of babies at the zoo. >> we do! starting in the orangutan center we have two adorable about one year old, we have some lion cubs, we have giraffe calves, 70 babies all over the zoo! >> why do people need to just make that two hour trip? it's not that far. they come and check on the indianapolis zoo. >> one of the things absolutely love about the zoo and coming, no matter what time of year that you calm, there is always something that has happened and it is totally new and totally different from the last time that he visited. the animals are always growing and changing so that is a lot of fun. and you know, it is a great escape that is really close to home. and it is a great opportunity to learn something new about some amazing animals. >> it will be an amazing weekend. hopefully over there and people can come to check out the zoo. maybe learn a little more about the animals. thank you so much for coming. making the trip here to share more information about the
