Kylie Khan reports Fri, 19 May 2017 21:30:35 +0000 Bike 2 work Kylie Khan reports WHAG shoes and strapping on helmets to take a different kind of transportation friday. whag's kylie khan finds out how people are gearing up for bike to work day << kylie khan, reporting: more than 100 people stopped by the gaithersburg pit stop at the corner of great seneca highway and orchard ridge drive. this was just one of 85 pit stops in the metro d-c area for bicyclists. jane wikman: my friend betsy asked me one year if i would join her and so it's become a tradition. kylie khan: bike to work day was established in 1956 throughout the country. gaithersburg started participating in 2013. city officials hope this will become a habit that will last beyond just this week. ollie mumpower: biking to work is a safe and convenient way to go to work, we believe. it's also environmentally the right thing to do. that's really the main purpose of this to encourage people to try it out and see if it works for them. kylie khan: with so many bicyclists on the road, city leaders had to take precautions. joseph allen: a few new bikers might be out, people who haven't been out and don't necessarily know their way. we have all these signs all over helping people know that we're out here. jane wikman: you need to be conscientious of the drivers. i know kylie khan: with constant traffic jams in montgomery county, a couple of people deciding not to drive can make a big difference. joseph allen: telecommute, bus or biking can actually change and provide free flow for traffic. people think a whole bunch of people have to do it. it's just a few people deciding to do something different each and every day. kylie khan: reporting in gaithersburg, kylie khan, i 270 news. >> choices for a beverage
