http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12463/6924800?cpt=8&wpid=2637 Fri, 19 May 2017 22:58:31 +0000 Slavery story Emilie Ikeda reports http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12463/6924800?cpt=8&wpid=2637 WHAG it can happen in a hotel, outside of a grocery store, or on a farm...we're talking about modern day slavery -- and it has a shocking presence right here in the four- state region.... tasmin: in a special report -- whag's emilie ikeda investigates sex trafficking and shares the story of a local woman who survived the sex slave trade. <<emilie ikeda reporting: tina frundt, founder of courtney's house: "when people first hear of sex immediately overseas and we think held captive." emilie ikeda reporting: but tina frundt knows the reality of sex trafficking and its merciless grip on america -- first hand. tina frundt, founder of courtney's house: "you don't see the signs as a child. this person didn't try to have sex with me. i thought this person was just being nice, he told me to go to college. then, when you trust them it changes." emilie ikeda reporting: it was a relationship that began when tina was just 13 years old -- the man, 15 years her senior... a year after their meeting, she left her hometown with him, and the trafficker made tina a sex slave. tina frundt, founder of courtney's house: "i was in the life for a very long time, for over 10-15 years, and that's why i started courtney's house. it's not easy to get out. i didn't have the services that i needed." natsot <bird> emilie ikeda reporting: since 2008, tina's non-profit has helped more than 650 victims escape from being trafficked in the d-m-v area -- through counseling, therapy, and fun... natsot <prettiest and baddest> emilie ikeda, @emilieikeda: "over a period of four years, from january 2013 through january 2017, there were 221 confirmed or highly suspected child sex trafficking victims in maryland, according to university of maryland's school of social work." jodi finkelstein, executive director of commission for women: "there's trafficking in montgomery county? there's trafficking in frederick county? yes." emilie ikeda reporting: in 2016, montgomery county police's vice and intelligence unit seized more than 140-thousand dollars from stings involving human trafficking, prostitution, and solicitation. tina frundt, founder of courtney's house: "i loved living there, it's a of trafficking just like anywhere else." dr. rafiah prince, supervisory therapist at the victim assistance and sexual assault program: "it's an organized thing, it can be noticeable that people see. and it's very lucrative." emilie ikeda reporting: maryland's most populous county is vulnerable for two reasons -- money... and location. tina frundt, founder of courtney's house: "it's easy to manipulate children because children don't think they're being manipulated, especially if you live in the suburbs. you're not as street-savvy, you don't know." emilie ikeda reporting: but there's been a recent increase in action against trafficking -- as investigators find the internet widening the problem. laura erstling, child welfare services: "it's becoming a really big issue with the onset, and the ease of the internet." emilie ikeda reporting: in 2014, executive ike leggett created the human trafficking task force in montgomery county... a year later, maryland established a workgroup to study safe harbor policy... one of governor hogan's appointees? -- tina. tina frundt, founder of courtney's house: "the sadder thing about this, this may have happened many years ago, but it actually happens exactly like this every day still." emilie ikeda reporting: --a reality that tina is built to battle... in montgomery county, emilie ikeda, i-270 news. >> tasmin: in frederick county, maryland-
