http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12451/6941690?cpt=8&wpid=2637 Thu, 01 Jun 2017 11:21:26 +0000 Clip:RGV Vixens One of Valley’s Female Football Teams The general managers said the owner formed the league to empower women by promoting health and an active lifestyle http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12451/6941690?cpt=8&wpid=2637 KRGV the ladies...football. yes, football. and there's a league for women right here in the valley? here's rick diaz with today's con mi gente. nats man "pick up the knees ladies. let's go." harlingen these ladies are all members of the rio grande valley vixens out of harlingen. we caught up with them during practice. nats "ready, set, hike." ...running with the ball... jo davila & lisa leal two ladies gen. managers rgv vixens "the owner decided to form this league. she wanted something that was going to benefit women. bring them out of the box. try something new on a man's level. to promote health, active life and to empower women most of all." the age of these ladies we are told, range from 18 to their mid-40's. david gonzalez vixens head coach "these girls have kids. they're mothers. they're aunts. some of them are grandmothers. they have grandkids. and they're out here willing to put in that work and willing to grind and get those wins on saturday nights." an interesting aspect of the team, the coaches don't get paid and neither do any of the players. jo davila & lisa leal "the girls have to go out there and look for sponsors and if they don't find sponsors, they, for the most part, will pay out of pocket." nats "set, hit." ...running a play... kron hokes coach "a lot of girls don't think they have what it takes to play football. it's kind of different when you actually see them." nats girls "i love it. defense. hell yeah. it's awesome." anna #22 & stephanie #79 mother/daughter "mom: well, i inspire my daughter. we're mother and daughter. this is actually our second season. daughter: she brought me in and not many people can say you play football with your mom." bailey #5 vixen player "i play quarterback and running back. i'm also wide receiver and if they need me i play corner." their practice can go into early evening. quincy tatum vixen coach "first off, i've got my wife playing. i remember when she first asked me that she wanted to play football and i was like, tackle football, no." mara tatum vixen player "first he did not want me to play and then after some thought he told me, you know what, don't let anybody tell you what to do, not even me." ashley flores vixen player "i first wanted to play because they've always said this is something women can't do." sophie carrizalez vixen player "you actually have to have the heart to want to play. if not, you're just going to get hurt going out there." brenda reyna vixen player "it's not light tackle. you're going to get laid out." nats ...cheering... there are at least four teams in the valley and the ladies play on saturday evenings. nats ...cheering... for channel five news, i'm rick diaz, con mi
