Use Social Media in Your Job Search Mon, 05 Jun 2017 21:14:29 +0000 How to Use Social Media in Your Job Search Use Social Media in Your Job Search KAMR thank you, meaghan. >> meaghan: social media can be a powerful tooling. there a few important things to know to make sure your profile doesn't keep you from landing a big interview. before you hit "apply now" another job posting, irene keller tells us how to dress to impress. irene, what do you mean by dress for success online? >> well, dressing to impress online is no different than you would dress to impress in person. you know not to show up for an interview half presentable, so why would you do this same thing online. you know that across all of social media, all of your profiles, everything you put online needs to be ready to impress in the same way. >> meaghan: so what are your tips building a professional social profile. >> well, i've got a couple tips. the first one is to make the decision that i want to create my story, to make the first impression, and what i mean by that is if we don't do that, we just let a bunch of random google search results speak for us as well as our social media profiles that often are out of date or incomplete. so once we've decided what is it we want people to know about our work background and our skills and what we've done with along with our schooling, we need to make sure that information is public, and on facebook, people don't realize they can control the privacy of particular pieces of information. so on the about page on our profile, you want to be sure that you change the settings to make all of that available. so employers can see that, see your qualifications for the job. >> meaghan: and then what are the biggest mistakes job seekers make when they're using social media? >> some of the mistakes that i see, oh, so often are before getting ready to look for a job, remembering to take a step back and look at everything that you've posted online, facebook, twitter, wherever it is, and really ask yourself, does this really support the impression i'm trying to make. is this something i want a perspective employer to consider? and if not, this would be really the best opportunity to maybe get rid of that, just to take that away, because you don't want to distract from the impression that you're trying to make, and another mistake is not realizing that connecting with those employers online through their social media accounts is a great way to learn all about the company and really help to prepare for the interview and show that you know what's going on internally. >> meaghan: so how can facebook's new job bookmark help grads start their new career. >> it's a great career for new grads, for people looking for summer employment, because there are jobs listed there, hourly jobs that very often are local right nearby where you are. so you can find jobs near you, and now that you have really cleaned up your facebook profile and made the right information publicly viewable so they can see why you're qualified, you can use that profile to apply directly to the job, and you can find those jobs either
