Rochester-based EkoStinger is using new aerodynamic technology to rapidly grow its business. Wed, 12 Jul 2017 10:18:14 +0000 Why ROC: EkoStinger Rochester-based EkoStinger is using new aerodynamic technology to rapidly grow its business. WROC once again for our "why roc?" conversation. i'm pleased to welcome to the program the president and ceo from ekostinger parr wiegel. parr it's great to have you in studio. parr: nice to be here! mark: so ekostinger is making some big moves in your industry, so let's begin by telling our viewers what ekostinger does. parr: we make aerodynamic systems for the trailer section of a tractor and trailer. so we save about 6 to 10 percent in fuel. we reduce mist on the road so that it's safer for the trucker and for the passenger cars passing it. we prolong the life of the trailer and we reduce maintenance. so we're a complete package into the industry. mark: you're growing. you're growing rapidly. what's driving this growth? parr: we've actually changed some narrative with the industry. the industry had been using side skirts and other devices trying to save fuel. the issue there is that the rear wheels of the trailer move back and forth about 13 feet, and when you're over 3 feet back, they stop functioning as an aerodynamic device, and actually cause drag. our system moves with the tandems of the trailer, and keeps the aerodynamics consistent. mark: okay. give us a sense of this growth. i mean you said literally this morning that right now you're looking to add 10 people. parr: 10 to 12 people right now. mark: right now! give give us a sense of the overall growth. how it's really taking a foothold here. parr: okay, so we're doubling in size about every 2 months. from a people standpoint, from an order standpoint. and what we're seeing is the industry, we've finally broken the narrative to say "you really do need to have a better product underneath your trailer." and so i can see us adding another 10 people in another 2 months. mark: and your new location is the old sentry safe location in east rochester, right? parr: it couldn't have been better timing. i hate that they left the country, but i'm very, very happy that they did, and left the space for us. so, it's a very good space, and it's perfect for us. mark: rochester you explained to me is very well located from a business standpoint. but the "why roc?" component of our conversation, there's more to it than that. you're a rochester guy. parr: i'm a rochester guy. everybody in the company is rochester people. my kids go to mercy and mcquaid. you know i'm very proud of being a rochesterian. we can go into canada from in here really quickly. on thursday we have our new canadian distributors in town. we can distribute to indianapolis, so route 90 is a big thing. but the best thing about rochester is that every level of person that you get here has a good base of intellect. you can teach them. they work hard. it is a great community to be in, and everybody that we hire, they stay with us, because we have a lot of fun with what we're doing. and we try and hire people that get along. and so it's been a really, really good ride. mark: well it was exciting to learn about the company. continued success with this rapid growth, and we'll look to see where you take it here in the months and years to come. parr: we're going to take it to number one in the country. that's for sure!
