WATN real-time closed captioning provided by u.s. captioning company >> live from watn local 24 in high definition. this is local memphis live. now, here is your host, amy speropoulos. >>amy: good morning and thank you for joining us for a marvelous monday here on local memphis live. we have a great show for you today. one hour of all local memphis live news. we have got an incredible man in our studio as we kickstart the 59th annual southern christian leadership conference. it is set to get underway this week. we have the president and ceo of the southern christian leadership conference in her studio, a man who has made history himself and has a message he hopes will permeate here in the 901. >> we introduce you to two young girls headed to our capital to push for money and others like themselves living with type i diabetes. >> we are live in the studio with the young actors guild to give you a sneak peek of their performance of disney's " linking junior .". >> our next guest is leading the southern christian conference and ready to make history here in the 901 and the stage is set for the national convention to happen right here in memphis this week. we are honored and i am so excited to welcome to our city, the president and ceo of the conference, doctor charles steele. good morning x good morning. thank you for having me. >>amy: i had followed you for many years, born in tuscaloosa and you are from tuscaloosa, alabama. >> born in tuscaloosa. >>amy: i remember when you lead the way to bring the percentage plant alabama. it was a huge deal. >> it was big. >>amy: you have done so many amazing things, doctor trent evan is an honor to have you asked i want to ask you one thing. can you reserve this tape for me? >>amy: absolutely. i will. it's amazing the things you have done that have led up to this moment. in fact, you are the only person who made history by becoming the first conference resident and ceo to's position twice. >> you know it all. thank you so much.eccable. i am happy to be here. as you know, because we know so many people, i am just so elated. as you know, i resigned from my senate seat to found the conference. people say you are a senator. are you crazy? how can you do that? >> the position at that, we were about to lose. and i thought i can't let doctor king and his organization died. >>amy: wow! >> i was just leaving memphis and all fired up. i said, charles, tell me more. you have to go back with me. she said, i will. >>amy: yes. >> 60 miles away. >>amy: that is exactly right. >> i was there three or four weeks ago twice. a public.w! he saw the impoverished conditions there in mississippi. he said to reverend abernathy, we have to do something about this. and doctor abernathy said what do you want to do? he started crying he said, we had to go to washington, dc for a campaign. >>amy: wow! and you are carrying that. poverty at the center and the forefront of the mission of the commission. >> what we need to realize and convey, african-americans have lost 52 percent of our wealth. that's our homes. >>amy: businesses, homes were all combined. and it has been tough because we don't have access to capital. you can't go traditionally as we used to do the banks to get a small lump you can't build a relationship with a bank. when frank came in for a good reason, for people don't have access to capital. agile people, this is a menace to society. how can you exist without capital so that is what we are doing. >>amy: absolutely. and your wife is also playing such a key role in this convention and has been at the very beginning holding an empowerment luncheon for all. what a beautiful thing that is. >> thank you so much for saying that. i talked to her this morning. she will be in on wednesday. she is a former educator, taught at central. >>amy: wow! in tuscaloosa, alabama. >> she was teaching at central high school and a history teacher, but she is responsible for the whole convention. and you became my homegirl is the southern christian leadership council is a power greater than us. we need to preserve and talk about the survival of my wife. this past april, she had brain surgery. picture?h, my gosh. we have gotten back from havana, cuba. >>amy: wow! >> she had brain surgery. >>amy: that's amazing. >> the second one in nine years. >>amy: you are kidding me. >> we have this conference and the historicity of where we come from, we are very impactful and very elated to be in memphis this is a great city. regardless of the economic state, i love memphis. it's beautiful people and we are back home. >>amy: give us a message this morning on monday. i am so sorry. my producer is yelling at me but i had to ask. we don't have doctor charles steele in the house very often. >> doctor king said doctor darkness can find out darkness only lights can do that. this is what love does and i love you. >>amy: i love you, doctor steele read the southern christian leadership conference, doctor steele thank you so much. it is thursday through saturday at the peabody. you can get the information at their website or facebook. it is a true honor and pleasure to have you in the house. >> keep up the good work. >>amy: coming up, two young ladies standing by this warning to get you ready to hear how they
