“Dunkirk”: Film Critic Chuck Koplinski Thu, 20 Jul 2017 21:28:16 +0000 “Dunkirk”: Film Critic Chuck Koplinski “Dunkirk”: Film Critic Chuck Koplinski WCIA >>matt: a much anticipat film in a horror film or on area screens. here to tell us about it, and kirk. chuck koplinski, dunkirk, this is not a traditional war movie. >> you've got - - who did inception, the three batman things from a different light. he takes a page from inception and that he tells it from three different timelines. dunkirk is in northwestern france. the allied forces were driven back by the germans. they are on the beaches of dunkirk and the straits of dover. you can see england from there. it's 26 miles away but they cannot get there. it's told from the timeline of the men waiting on shore. 10 days from evacuation. then it's told by an english merchant who gets on his own boat who tries to pick up some of the soldiers, one day before evacuation. then we too: c2 fighter pilots. that story is told one hour before evacuation. they are presented concurrently. they are all converging in this one place. one hour, one day and 10 days out. frankly, i found that to be very distracting. i was looking to see if everything fits together and if there was any overlap. >>matt: you want to know what one person was doing at the time someone else was doing. >> exactly. frankly, it prevented me from becoming very emotionally involved in it. this is a very well-made film. as far as acting, it is all very well done. i will recommend this movie. it didn't have the emotional pull i wanted. i wasn't completely moved. i wasn't in tears and i think that's the whole goal is to underscore the human sacrifice that went into this event. >>matt: the timeline distracted you from the storytelling. >> if i'm not engaged within 5-10 minutes, we've got a big problem. a good movie, i'm just not as high on it as other people right now. >>matt: you are not thinking we will see it during award
