Thu, 27 Jul 2017 23:13:03 +0000Downtown Thursday in Panama CityDowntown Thursday in Panama Cityhttp://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12513/7019848?cpt=8&wpid=2637WMBBbusinesses in downtown panama city are trying something new tonight to attract more visitors. they are calling it 'downtown thursday.' instead of closing their doors at five, they are keeping them open until nine. news 13's kirsten mitchell joins us live from downtown panama city. kirsten, why are they doing this? jerry, not only is tonight for locals to discover new shops, but its an opportunity for business owners to prove that downtown is a destination. sarah o'brennan and her husband opened blasted screen print & boutique in downtown panama city just a few months ago. she remembers when downtown panama city was popular place to be. sarah o'brennan, blasted screen print & boutique "most of us grew up here and i've been here since i was ten and i spent so much time down here as a teenager and it was so much fun there was so much to do, it was a destination and i know we all, not even business owners want to see downtown become a destination again." thats why for the first time, many businesses will stay open late in hopes of attracting more people to the area. sarah o'brennan, blasted screen print & boutique "some of the local businesses got together and said lets do this, lets stay open." kim stiegler is one of the owners of "the place downtown" and hopes tonight will be a success. kim stiegler owner of place downtown "the last couple years have been an improvement, almost all the store fronts are filled now. we're really excited about tonight's event as well. we're always open at night but it's nice to have some other people stay open as well too so we're looking forward for the crowds to come down." business owners say some shops are still closed and that adds to the perception that downtown isn't a place to go. sarah o'brennan, blasted screen print & boutique "we tried for a year to find a spot. and even thought there are so many places that are sitting empty, people just dont want to sell. and i dont know if they are hoping for this marina developement to happen and then their property will be worth more but in the meantime i wish people would just lease them out, sign a year lease with somebody, let someone come in here and do something." she also is the new treasurer on the downtown improvement board. sarah o'brennan, blasted screen print & boutique "its really cool. i've been really pleased at how the business owners get along great and really want to build each other up." if tonight is successful, they plan on staying open late once a month on thursdays. thanks kirsten, check it out tonight in downtown panama city.
