Travel and Phone Tue, 01 Aug 2017 15:48:12 +0000 Travel and Phone Travel and Phone KTVX ABC 4 Salt Lake City within i'm here with christopher for tech time tuesday, he's been traveling a lot lately. out of the country, i'm so glad we are talking about there, if you are planning on traveling out of the country, what do you do with your cell phone, how do you call naturally and not get charged all that cash? >> this is probably a question i get asked a lot. >> first thing we need to talk about what an unlocked-- when you by a new phone or upgrade what is the first question they ask you. >> what is your. >> what carrier are you on, so those phones are tied to that carrier. an if they are not unlocked, before you travel internationally, you can't use another company's sim card because it's tied to that carrier. >> can i unlock it or does someone have to do it. >> you have to get it unlocked through your carrier. >> you need to call at&t, t-mobile, verizon, sprint, wherever and say hey, i have been with you for awhile, i need my phone unlocked and they will do it for you. >> okay. >> now only case they won't is if the phone is too new and you haven't been on contract long enough. now i actually buy my phones brand new and i buy them unlocked so they are more expensive that way but i'm not locked into a contract. >> if i ask for that, i might be charged more. >> people don't understand cost of phones is $600, $700. if you get it out of contract. >> so that is the first thing you need to know. is it unlocked and if it's not, get it unlocked. >> why do i need tun locked. >> the reason is so you can change the sim card. i actually have a couple of phones, this one actually the sim card is up on the top. >> wait. >> i can take the sim card out of this iphone. >> absolutely. >> i didn't know that. >> galaxy on the top. on thrix phone it is on the side and i will actually, this is a little sim card tool strks just you can take a paper clip or anything. >> an pop it in the little hole there. >> out of the side. >> and a little tray will come out. >> so i have never done that before. >> and when you take the tray out there is your sim card. when you get to another country, you can actually right at the airport there are two things that are all around. convert your money, and get a phone or get a sim card, a touring sim card. >> i thought it was a calling card. >> no. >> so it comes on the card like this, notice the sim card is actually a bigger sim card but then there are break downs of smaller sizes. >> okay. >> so now we can take out this sim card. this happens to be my fij iphone number because i was in fiji. >> and you pop that in, notice my phone tully says, no sim card installed. >> and the sim card has all of your information. >> that is your phone number. >> everything on it. >> when you put that in, the sim card goes on, this one is going to say welcome to the u.s., this is the rates of your calls. >> okay. >> so what you put that in, the most important part is take your u.s. sim card, put it in your phone case and put your phone in it. >> don't ever lose that because that is your u.s. phone number. >> so now what happens that i have a different sim card. >> now i'm on a fiji sim card which means it is a local number for anyone in fiji, if i meet people i can give them may number f i have problems i can call legally. >> it is free. >> or a prepaid plan. >> what if i call you from the u.s >> with the iphone you have an apple i.d. that you can use facetime audio or facetime be it's free through-- it text messages are free, all of that stuff is free. >> so when you traveled internationally how much did you spend on extra phone. >> every new country i inned up spending about $25 to $30 for the weak that is with there, rather than getting home to a $600 dollar u.s. bill, i have a text message from when i got to fije. it says free t moibl message, welcome to fiji, out of plan coverage, 50 cents per text, $4.19 per minute, for info call. >> and you are cringing every time someone texted you. >> had i not switched out my sim card i what have been calling $4 a minute. >> if you are traveling you have to go to tech life on social
