((ron futrell)) yes --- the stick and the puck --- just use these to score this more times than your opponent and you win the game --- there --- there's your hockey lesson for the day --- but i do need to talk about this for a minute and a half --- so here's more. ((ron - is it simple just to say, very hard rubber and it gets harder when it frozen. murray - it gets harder when it gets frozen and really hard when it hits at 100 mph. ron- you've been hit? murray - i've been hit everywhere. every place in my body's been hit by that thing. i got a terrible slap shot to the face and it crushed the whole side of my face in. ron- looks like murray's face has survived okay - oh, how bout this - there was a time in the 17th century - before vulcanized rubber - when they used frozen road apples as pucks. look it up, found it on wikipedia. well, todays pucks make stick handling a little bit easier. ron- so the puck also has these grips on the side im assuming to get it to stick to the stick. murry, yes, it gives you a little bit of a grip and then we generally have tape on the sticks, these are brand new sticks. we haven;t taped them up. it allows the puck to fly like a disc,a frisbee almost. it goes faster than wobbly. the idea of the grip was to be able to handle the puck a little bit better and have that puck spin off the stick. ron - as for the hockey stick, today they use fancy stuff like carbon fiber and kevlar. murray. there's no more wood anymore,. the stick used to be wood. these are all composite and they're like surgical tools. the only reason you can shoot the puck as you do now are these sticks, there's no way if you had wood sticks that these guys could shoot the puck like they do now. )) ((ron futrell)) so --- it's all about the sticks and the pucks --- the pucks --- this stick --- already taped up by john langeler here at the station --- when the sticks were wooden -- about 20 years ago --- the players used to bend and shape the blade -- and that was an important part of pre game prep in the past. also brought in a puck to check out --- i couldn't find a frozen road apple, so we'll settle for the newer vulcanized rubber. ((christianne klein)) >> stay with us... "try it before you buy it" is next!//// announcer:
