http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12503/7074878?cpt=8&wpid=2637 Tue, 05 Sep 2017 15:25:52 +0000 How to spot fake photos tech time fake photos http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12503/7074878?cpt=8&wpid=2637 KTVX ABC 4 Salt Lake City >> it is tech time tuesday and christopher is back on the show and we were just talking in the break about fake pictures. and how to spot them, and you said a lot of fake pictures coming out of harvey, i didn't know that. >> unfortunately natural disasters bring out a lot of fake pictures now this is actually real footage of harvey. >> okay. >> you can see stuff lining up against the roads and pem out there helping but there is a lot of fake stuff going around what is the incentive to post that. >> people can make money off viral photos and videos so the more they get it to sick late the more people are clicking and the more money they are making the other thing is there are people with the ill-will to scam people and get donations. that will never see the light of day in the harvey situation. >> so there are a lot of fake posts out there, that are telling you donate somewhere that is not legitimate. >> right, or there are just the posts trying to make something appear one way, one is the airport in houston there is the picture of the airport, all the planes are covered in water, and just tails of the planes are sticking out. have you seen that photo. >> no, but that would get me. >> that would get me to stop and look at it. >> yeah, so one of the things to keep in mind, if it looks leak a movie set t probably is fake. >> that circulated and a lot of people. >> that actually came from a project that there are some people doing a project of what would new york city look like if the ocean were to rise 20 feet that say markup of what laguardia airport would look like in that scenario. >> but it is a mock up. >> right. >> another one that is floating around is a little more eye catching t is of a shark, swimming next to a car, on the freeway, right. so this. >> it says believe it or not. >> exactly. and they always, they will have phrases like that or kaptd vaiting headlines. now looking at that, do you think it's real or fake? >> what do i look at to see if it is fake? >> so, really, can you believe that there is a car that high up in that amount of watt sner. >> okay, wait a second, are you right, how are you driving. >> so you got to look at perspective and look at what is going on, that picture was taken, there is a picture of a shark swimming along the coast, i think and they took that picture and cut that out, and put it in a picture of a car driving. >> and there is nothing to stop you from posting something like that. >> oh no, absolutely not. >> and the frustrating part for me is lately a lot of people have been asking me, did you see that picture of hurricane harvey? well, hurricanes have a soft spot in my heart because i've actually gone and done humanitarian work in the south pacific after a disasterrous hurricane. now is not the time to mess around. but these fake photos and posts have been going around for months and months. in fact, there are some other posts that i am still trying to research, of people blocking their houses and not being floods because of a water barrier surrounding the house within tens of thousands of people being displaced, it's not a funny situation in the leastment do i look at the source, would that help. >> you can lack at the source, it is easier the longer it goes because now you can search, hurricane harvey shark pictures. and it will come up with a bunch of posts saying this is fake, this is when the picture was actually first published. and this is what it actually s right. but initially f it looks leak it's not real, it probably isn't. >> it probably isn't. >> but you got to take that with a grain of salt because there are pictures of houston freeways. those are real. why does it matter, why does we need to hi which is are fake or not. >> you don't want to be donating money to people that are do-- to people just trying to get your money so make sure when are you donate be money whether it be the red cross, make sure are you going their website and donating not just something that you see the picture and are you moved by t and don't know a lot about it. >> tech time tuesday, everybody. if you would like to get ahold of krition tofer you can help you with so many things. thank you christopher for being here, up next we're headed that the kitchen,
