Dr. Patrick Conway Joins Echo Health Ventures’ Board of Directors

By Globenewswire

SEATTLE, Dec. 07, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Echo Health Ventures (EHV), a strategic collaboration between Cambia Health Solutions and Mosaic Health Solutions to invest in innovative health care services and health care information technology companies, today announced the appointment of Patrick Conway, MD, MSc to its board of directors.

Dr. Conway currently serves as President and CEO of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC), succeeding Brad Wilson, who helped launch EHV in partnership with Cambia Health Solutions in 2016. Dr. Conway was previously at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), where he served as Deputy Administrator for Innovation and Quality, and Director of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI). Dr. Conway with Mark Ganz, President and CEO of Cambia Health Solutions, will represent the parent companies of EHV on the board. Both are leaders driving innovation within their respective health plans, while broadening the landscape for health care transformation beyond their organizations.

“From Dr. Conway’s leadership steering federal health programs and policies that affected millions of Americans to his new role as leader of Blue Cross NC, his dedication to improving health care resonates with our commitment to building a health care system centered around the consumer,” said Echo Health Ventures President and CEO, Rob Coppedge. “The addition of Dr. Conway to EHV’s board reinforces the value we bring to our portfolio companies as they scale their innovations nationally.”

Dr. Conway joined CMS in 2011 as the agency’s Chief Medical Officer, where he advocated for health care payments tied to quality and innovation. He was elected to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) in 2014, one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine. He recently won an Innovator in Health Award from the Network for Excellence in Heath Innovation for his distinguished service to all Americans under three different U.S. administrations, and particularly for his leadership in transforming health care payment and delivery.

Prior to joining CMS, Dr. Conway oversaw clinical operations and research at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center as Director of Hospital Medicine, with a focus on improving patient outcomes across the entire multi-billion dollar health system. He is a practicing pediatric hospitalist and was selected as a Master of Hospital Medicine from the Society of Hospital Medicine. He has received the Presidential Rank Award, Distinguished Executive, and the Health and Human Services Secretary’s Award for Distinguished Service.

“Echo Health Ventures helps bridge the divide between the innovation economy and the needs of large health care enterprises. They have established a track record of creating high-value partnerships that accelerate the strategies of Cambia Health Solutions and Blue Cross NC and create value for their portfolio companies,” said Dr. Conway. “We share a common objective of making health care more accessible and affordable and the key to that success will be collaboration. I look forward to continuing Brad’s legacy and working with EHV to combine the resources and knowledge of large-scale health care companies with the creativity and drive of innovative startups.”

In Wilson’s more than two-decade tenure at Blue Cross NC, he was instrumental in driving innovation and the transition to value-based care. He expanded critical investments in programs that aimed to improve the health and well-being of customers and communities.

“Brad’s vision and leadership drove the founding of Echo Health Ventures and our distinctive investment model,” said Coppedge. “He recognized the opportunity to multiply resources, scale and impact by bringing together two health plans on opposite coasts joined by a shared vision of reshaping the health care system. His steadfast support and counsel helped establish the partnership that created EHV. As we close out our first year with milestone wins including new investments and a deeper team, we owe Brad a debt of gratitude for accelerating EHV’s momentum and leaving his post in excellent hands. We wish him the best in his well-earned retirement.”
