Sled Hockey WJMN 3 our special report tonight is about one u.p. man taking his passion for hockey to the next local 3's calvin lewis tells us, there's a unique hockey team forming right here in marquette. reporter: for allen beauchamp, playing the game of hockey is more than just an activity- it's a way of life.but after a life-changing accident, he thought he'd never hit the ice again.allen beauchamp, founder/ captain of u.p. sled hockey: "back in 2010 i was involved in an accident that left me paralyzed from the waist down. i thought hockey was over at that point; it really wasn't, i found this sport. about two years ago i went down and tried it in grand rapids and fell in love with the sport all over again." joan miller, allen's fiance: "we went down there about two years ago. he got on the ice for the first time and it was very emotional, overjoyed. i could see it in him and my first reaction was, 'we're just going to move to grand rapids and do this.' he responded with, 'we need this in the u.p. and i'm going to start a program.'"reporter: that trip to grand rapids led allen into forming the u.p. sled hockey team here in marquette.what took years of planning has finally started to turn into fulfillment. miller: "he ran with it. he had a vision board and he just worked on it. he wrote two grants, got approved for both of those, and he's just very passionate about getting people on the ice who otherwise could not play stand-up hockey."reporter: players strap themselves into a sled, grab their hockey sticks and hit the ice.each stick has a metal blade that allows the player to move themselves forward.beauchamp: "it's an adaptive sport that brings the game of hockey to any individual that has your different challenges in playing traditional ice hockey."miller: "the only boundaries you have are the ones you put on yourself. i think that's a huge message that i know we believe in, personally, because a lot of able-bodied people even put boundaries on themselves. you need to just remove those and step out of your comfort zone and just go for it."reporter: even through his accident, allen was able to find new love in hockey again. beauchamp: "it may be in different circumstances but i'm still on the ice, still shooting the puck and scoring goals. it's awesome."reporter: reporting in marquette, calvin lewis, local
