WELCOME THIS MORNING TO TELL US MORE, LIBRARIAN VIVIAN HALL! Wed, 06 Dec 2017 15:49:00 +0000 LML: FRAYSER LIBRARY CENTER GRAND OPENING WELCOME THIS MORNING TO TELL US MORE, LIBRARIAN VIVIAN HALL! WATN >> local memphis live continues with your host, amy speropoulos. >>amy: for so many mothers, education begins while the babies are still in the womb, reading to them, playing classical music. after the baby is born, you don't have to wait until kindergarten to test those skills. in fact a new early literacy center is assumed to open at the fraser library combining singing and hands-on elements to get youngsters learning at an early age. woke up this morning, vivian hall. good morning, vivian. how are you? >> good morning, amy. i'm doing well. how are you? >>amy: i love all the things around you. tell us where you are. >> i am in the fraser discovery read learning center where parents and children to engage in very early learning opportunities. so right here, we have what we call a great collection of readers. we also have easy fiction books for parents and children to engage in reading together to prepare them for reading as they reach kindergarten. we also have what we call a sensory cube. the focus is on math, motor skills and it is really nice. i am looking forward to the children working on it learning about the abcs and so forth. i think it is going to be pretty good for our children. let me step back a little bit. this center focuses on activities such as playing, reading of course, talking, singing and writing. if you are not playing we can engage with the kitchen set and help them explore their imagination and so forth. we can go back to reading with what we call our big book for our children. this will help them explore their imagination and help them with counting. we also have some active play were we have building blocks for babies. we have a puppet studio for our babies. is it nice? they are going to love it. let me add one more thing to it. let me get around here, amy. >>amy: i love that. >> isn't as nice? we have access to technology. we have a computer over here for the children and has learning activities for them. this is going to be awesome. and the key to this though is it doesn't cost parents anything to come to our center. we do want them to engage with our children however. that is what we want them to do, amy, to engage with our children because they cannot learn alone. that is one key thing about it. also, we can, i guess, we wouldn't have the centers without the people who find us. that is a memphis library foundation. that is the urban child institute and friends of the library. >>amy: i am so glad you brought that up. >> they are having a grand opening. >>amy: i am glad you brought that up because we can donate to the programs to help keep programs like this one open and running. >> absolutely. we are having a grand opening this coming thursday. that is december 7 at 4:00 pm. we want to invite the community to come out and enjoy the celebration with us as we are going to have a ribbon-cutting to working with more children and have everyone come out and get involved with their children. whether you are a daycare provider or a parent, it is going to be great. >>amy: absolutely. >> we are looking forward to it. >>amy: indian, thank you so much. we so much appreciated. it is a grand opening of the discovery read early learning center at the fraser library, 3712
